Gone are the days when the children have to take turns and fight with each other over who gets to do the dishes.

And by do, I mean, actually washing and rinsing with nothing but your own two hands, dishwashing liquid and water.

Ever since the dishwasher became popular and widespread in the 70s, it has become one of the best friends of every household.

In simple terms, these machines clean by spraying hot and detergent-added water to remove the soiling.

But over the years, the dishwasher has evolved into so much more than just a simple wash and rinse machine. Many new features has been added to the different kinds and brands to make our lives more convenient, especially in this age where everything moves in a harried fashion. And our kitchen appliances have to catch up or else they will be left behind.

Some have raised the hot water temperature that comes from the water heater. This means dishes don’t have to be pre-rinsed therefore shortening the wash cycle. Another feature on some models is that it grinds up the left-over food particles and flushes them out with water. This way, food particles aren’t re-deposited in the dishes. Some now use soil sensor technology to measure the level of soil in water and how dirty your dishes are and adjusts the wash cycle accordingly, which saves water and energy in the long run. If your problem is that the machine is too noisy, now we have models that use thicker insulation to make the washer operate more quietly. They make the wash arms smaller and direct water away from the tub door and toward the dishes so the rinse cycle is quieter.

Efforts have also been made to make the dishwasher “sexier”. Unlike other kitchen appliances which are featured on cooking-themed shows, it has gotten no such attention, probably because of its utilitarian purposes. Still, a good-looking addition to your kitchen doesn’t hurt. Some now have a floating glass finish--made of tempered glass sheets adhered to steel framework and in black or white color. Many manufacturers offer integrated dishwashers built so that a cabinet-front panel can be attached to the door, allowing the appliance to blend in with the surrounding cabinetry. Some manufacturers also offer them now in different colors, to blend in with the other color schemed kitchen appliances. For a steeper price than other models, you can also avail of compact models that not only can you do smaller loads, but can separate your fine china and your stemware from your pots and pans if you want to.
