How to you deal
with your money? Do you get a paycheck every week or every two weeks
and then maybe pay some bills then use the rest on new clothes or
electronics, or maybe spend it going out to eat?
In other words, do you have absolutely no organized way of dealing
with your money? If it sounds like I'm putting this financial lifestyle
down, you are absolutely right.
This money management planned is doomed from the start. If it
doesn't eventually put you into debt, it will leave you without
any sort of retirement or savings for emergencies.
No matter who you are, how old you are, if you're married or single,
or if you make a lot of money or not much at all, you need to plan
your finances. Planning when you have little money will help you
make it through tough times and planning when you have a lot of
money will keep you from wasting it and wondering where it went.
Financial planning is not difficult. It may sound intimidating,
but it's not. If you really don't think you can do it, you can always
hire a financial planner, but for most, it's not necessary. To begin
planning your finances, you will need to look at where you are now.
Dig through your pile of records and bank statements and figure
out how much money you have, how much your assets are worth if you
have any, and how much money you owe. Figuring out your net worth
and current circumstances will help you with the next step.
Next, make your goals. Do you want to pay off your debt by next
year? Make it a goal. Do you want to retire at age 55 with $2,000,000?
Make it a goal. Some things might sound impossible, but with a goal
set, the right plan of action, and a little reasonable thought,
many of these seemingly impossible goals are very possible. Do you
think you could never save up a $15,000 emergency fund in 2 years
on $50,000 salary? With a little hard work and perseverance, you
can do it.
Finally, you need to plan how you are going to complete these goals.
Get out your calculator and start punching the numbers to see if
your goals are possible first without selling an organ, and then
write out a plan on how you will achieve. Make a budget of your
money so that you can complete your goals. The very last thing you
need to do is to take action and follow your plans!
