CaseLogic DC-50 Digital Camera Case

Matt Chroust

The Nikon Coolpix 950 comes with a fabric case that keeps your camera from being scuffed, but doesn't offer any real protection or storage for even the most basic accessories.

I've been looking for a case for my camera that gives me a bit more storage, and also better protect it against the inevitable knocks and rattles.

Some of the features I really wanted were the following

  • A perfect fit - I don't want the camera wallowing around inside an oversize case
  • Padded sides to protect the camera
  • Quick access velcro closure. Zippers are okay, but they can be a pain.
  • Storage for a couple sets of AA batteries. Digital Cameras eat batteries, even the high capacity kinds, so you can't have too many.

I've found the CaseLogic DC-50 Digital Camera Case meets all these requirements! Now if I could just find one that would hold all my extra lenses...

STORAGE

In addition to providing a perfect fit for the Coolpix 950, the case has room for two sets of AA batteries (actually a total of ten could fit) and a couple of Clik! disks or CompactFlash memory cards.

Zippers along the sides alow the case to open completely, revealing a mesh, compartment which opens with its own zipper, perfect for the batteries, and an elastic topped pocket for your extra memory.

The case's accessory area is actually large enough that you could carry a Clik! drive together with the camera.

I had to remove the two sets of AA batteries and extra Clik! disks to accommodate this. Since the Clik! drive comes with its own holder, this really isn't necessary.

PROTECTION

This case is literally a "perfect fit" for the 950. So much so that I really doubt the slightly longer 900/910 cameras would fit very well.

The sides and front, bottom and top are well padded.

(I don't use the lens cap Nikkon provided with the camera. I'd probably just end up losing it somewhere.)

The bottom of the case is reinforced with a panel of the textured Naugahyde material.

CONVENIENCE

The top of the case closes over the front with a velcro seal. It also has a couple of side gussets that help keep out nasties. This isn't a waterproof case by any means, but I wouldn't be too concerned about taking it to the beach or exposing it to light rain.

You can see how easy it is to get at the batteries once you've zipped down the sides.

Someone was really thinking!

Here you can see the back of the case has a provision for a belt loop. I don't use mine this way. I prefer the neckstrap.

The CaseLogic case also comes with its own shoulder strap that fits the two D-shaped plastic lugs, but what I do is use the Nikon-provided neckstrap, which I leave attached to the camera.

COST & AVAILABILITY

Cost should be less than $20 retail. You can find a list of retailers at the CaseLogic site.

Let me know if you can't find the CaseLogic case locally, and I'll arrange to ship you one for $30, U.S. postage included.

SUMMARY

I'm very satisfied with this case. I believe it is a perfect aesthetic and functional fit for the Coolpix 950. I took my camera around and tried dozens of cases at area camera stores that were near-misses. I actually bought this one on a day when I didn't have my camera with me, and you can't believe how juiced I was when I got it home and it fit like a second skin!
