As many people enjoy their look on their decks
or patios, cedar garden furniture is frequently employed on
them because the furniture is made from cedar, a common North
American hardwood.
The precise type of wood involved is typically a clear grade
western red cedar.
A major concern that many people have about outdoors furniture
is how it will thrive in different types of weather. |
For many living in the northern most part of the United States,
a real consideration that has to be taken into account when buying
garden furniture is whether or not it can stand up to the snow,
sleet, and hail.
The answer that many seek in order to keep out the negative effects
of the weather is the natural defenses against rot and decay found
in western red cedar. Many people across the United States went
crazy for the Adirondack Chair when it premiered because it was
the first such piece of furniture to come out of this wood. For
this reason, park benches commissioned by the federal government
began to be made out of this extremely durable wood.
During the Great Depression, many
of these benches were worked on by people in the WPA.
This era, which caused much unemployment throughout the
nation, saw the formation of the WPA, as President Roosevelt
designed it to give jobs to the unemployed.
Many cedar trees were cut down by those in the WPA and those
cedars went towards things like park benches.

Mold and mildew prevention also made cedar popular for the making
of chests. For sailors who would be constantly exposed to wet conditions,
these chests were a wonderful creation. Cedar and pine became a
popular combination to construct coffins during the same era. Over
in England, a place long haunted by the plague, many doctors preached
the benefits of using cedar coffins to stop contagious diseases
from spreading. Because of the many abilities and uses of cedar,
the wood has been used in many products.
