Eye problems are developing at a smaller age itself for the modern generation. Back in the older days people used to invest on spectacles.

Later it was found that sporting a spectacle is a major turn off and scientists started researching on ways to avoid spectacles. And they came forth with this innovative product termed as contact lenses.

We shall be looking into the contact lenses which are available for the modern generation, its advantages and disadvantages briefly in this article.

The subject is quite lengthy, but we shall be looking into some of the relevant points only.

So what exactly are contact lenses? These are specially crafted lenses, which are inserted into the eyes. They are mainly used as replacements to the common spectacles. Because they are inserted into the eyes, they are often miniature in nature. During the initial days contact lenses were made from glass, but with the passage of time other materials such as plastics and various forms of gas permeable materials are widely employed for the construction of contact lenses. There are mainly two types of contact lenses widely available on the markets – corrective type and non corrective type.

Corrective contact lenses are usually employed as spectacle replacements. They will be made precisely according to the needs of the patient and the patient dons them instead of a spectacle.

Some people are known to develop headaches when they use normal spectacles, hence such contact lenses can be used by them too.

The other form, the non corrective types are mainly employed for fashion purposes. Some people like to change the color and texture of their eyes, as they think it increases their style factor.

These contact lenses, do not come with any associated powered lenses and hence can be used by anyone.

While the product has many advantages, it has an equal share of disadvantages too. Back when these products were introduced for the first time, they were made up of glass like mentioned earlier. But people were careless and many were left with hampered eye sight and permanent damage to the pupil and various other related parts of the eyes. The glass contact lenses had this inherent property to crack when subjected to pressure, you will be donning something which can make you blind for the lifetime, if you are not careful enough. Hence manufacturers switched to plastics and various gas membrane materials for the construction of contact lenses.

Contact lenses are to be handled with extreme care and caution. You should never sleep with the contact lenses donned. Never ever rub the eyes when you are using the contact lenses. If you do it, it might lead to the generation of smaller wounds in the eyes and hence damage of the nerve cells of the eyes. The contact lenses must also be kept clean at all the times. The cleaning solution is usually provided along with the lens and appropriate care must be taken to keep the lenses clean, else it might result in infections of the eye.
