Imation has been manufacturing tape media and it the major manufacturer
in the industry of backup storage medium for more than fifty years.
Imation offers complete and wide range of optical and magnetic backup
tape media products for protection and security of data. This technology
minimizes the wear of DDS tape’s recording surface and precludes
the DDS tape reel from slipping. Back coating technology of “black
watch” was introduced and established successfully by Imation
in 1970. This technology is utilized in the Imation DDS tape cartridges
that results in cost effective and robust backup tape solution.
Imation DDS tape solution exceeds the growing storage needs of all
advanced application of MP (Metal Particulate). The other data tape
formats have polyester base below the recording surface. In the
black watch tape surface of Imation DDS, the polyester base is in
between the recording surface which is at the top and back coating
is below the polyester base.
The coating technology used in Imation DDS-1 and DDS-2 tape format
is “MP” and “MP+” respectively. “MP++”
coating is used in the Imation DDS3 and DDS-4 backup tape media.
PEN (poly-ethylene naphtha late) tape material is used in Imation
DDS1 and “aramide” is used in manufacturing data tapes
of second, third and fourth generation of Imation DDS format. The
native storage capacities of Imation DDS-1, DDS2, DDS 3 and DDS-4
are 2GB, 4GB, 12GB and 20GB respectively. Imation DDS-4 belongs
to the reliable and innovative DDS tape format’s fourth generation.
DDS4 tape media technology has improved attributes and also includes
the technologies of its previous generations that offer more data
storage value.
