Yoshimura, Yuji

Yuji Yoshimura

(1921-1997) Noted bonsai pioneer, artist, teacher and lecturer


Born Tokyo, Japan in 1921, Yuji Yoshimura was a bonsai teacher and lecturer, son of bonsai artist Toshiji Yoshimura, and husband of Kazuko Nagano Yoshimura. A graduate of Tokyo Horticultural School, he was the the proprietor of Kofu-en bonsai nursery in Japan.

In 1958, Mr. Yoshimura came to United States on a fellowship from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. He founded the Yoshimura Bonsai Co. in Tarrytown, N.Y. and the Yoshimura School of Bonsai in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., where he taught until 1995.

Mr. Yoshimura was a frequent contributor to International Bonsai Magazine.

and an instructor at the New York Botanical Garden, but is perhaps best known for his collaboration with Giovanna M. Halford in their book, The Japanese Art of Miniature Trees and Landscapes, which was first published in 1957 and reprinted in its 34th edition in 1992.

In 1990, Yoshimura's accomplishments were recognized by the bonsai community through the dedication of the Yuji Yoshimura Educational Center at the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum of the National Arboretum in Washington DC.

Mr. Yuji Yoshimura died December 24, 1997 at Medway Country Manor at the age of 76.
