"Tosh" Saburomaru

(1918-1996) Bonsai teacher, lecturer, landscape designer


Born in Hollister, California in 1918, Tosh returned to Japan at the age of ten. After completing his education in a farm village in the vicinity of Hiroshima, he returned with his family to Ventura, California in 1938. Mr Saburomaru was drafted to the US Army in 1941, married wife Mitsue and opened a general nursery in Palo Alto, California that was later relocated to Menlo Park, California after a period of flooding.

Tosh was a founding member of Kusamura Bonsai Association in 1955, which later became Kusamura Bonsai Club in 1960 with Tosh as its first President. He participated in the formation of a Bonsai Clubs Association of six area clubs, which later became Bonsai Clubs International. Mr Saborumaru initiated a regular series of educational tours to Japan in 1973, studied under Sensei Yuji Yoshimura, and provided lectures and demonstrations thoughout the US and at national bonsai conventions. In 1979 Tosh organized a tour to South America, where he presented a bonsai to the President of Venezuela.

Mr. Saburomaru maintained an active nursery and landscaping business for more than 40 years, and his nursery was principal in introducing imported plant species such as Trident Maple, Zelkova, Japanese White Pine and Satsuki Azalea.

Toshio T. Saburomaru died April 16, 1996 at 77 years of age.
