Miyahara Grafting Demonstrations
The March 2000 GENERAL MEETING featured an informative lecture on Grafting by Fred Miyahara from Southern California.
Fred provided details on performing grafting using Shimpaku Juniper and Japanese Black Pine scions.
The three keys to grafting are TIMING, PRACTICE and SHARP tools .
With the skill of a surgeon, Fred Miyahara slips a scion into a
Japanese Black pine while Midori Members and (doctors themselves) George Shotaw and Joseph Ma look on
The care Fred takes are evident in the detailed notes he prepared for his lectures
. The proper tools are easier to locate: Whetstones keep the grafting knife sharp between
cuts. The Grafting knives themselves are available in left-handed and right-handed configurations in a
number of styles. Wood-handled knives such as the one shown at right are prefered by some for a better grip. Folding knives that are easy to carry into the field and safer in the
toolbox are also available. Flat knives like those shown above without thick handles are generally easier to sharpen
