Ron Jussen Demonstrations
Ron Jussen gave an informative lecture on some of the details involved in repotting. Ron's holding a sieve that can accept different sized screens to grade soil and remove the
dust and fines which could choke the root system by clogging the container's drainage paths.

Here the stainless steel sifter is shown with a couple of different mesh screens. The
smallest removes anything finer than 1/16". These are discarded. The largest is a 1/4" mesh. Anything greater than 1/4 inch is discarded or saved for use as drainage rock
at the bottom of the container.
Some samples of soil graded through the screens may be used for different size bonsai. or layered in the bonsai container. The stainless steel soil scoops shown are used in repotting to distribute the soil around the base of the plant.
Ron quotes chapter and verse from the bonsai bible. Actually this bible was written by John Naka, and his Bonsai Techniques Vol
I and II describe some of the most important points to be considered in training bonsai.
Ron has quite a crowd assembled
das he describes the equipment used in repotting.
Bonsai wire, wire cutters and wire pliers are three essential instruments...
Ron
explains how to cover the drainage holes in the pot with drainage mesh and secure it in place with a staple made from wire.
The wire staple is formed using the pliers.
