Almost a score of fearless diggers attended the Oak Roundup organized by Joel Miller in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Dave Butt (L) is assisted by John Thompson in determining what to keep and what to do away with. Trying to ensure the success of the tree while maintaining some design possibilities requires an experienced eye.

What a huge stump!   I wonder if they would believe they grow them this big back at UC Davis?

Oaks come in all sizes.  This is an interesting shape. Joel Miller explained that he was able to locate some unique specimens by looking for deadfall and then digging in the areas surrounding.  The oaks had been bent or broken by the falling branches of larger redwoods and pines, creating interesting bends and character.
