Making the Most of Your Kitchen Design
By: Julia Winters

When designing a kitchen, you should have two goals on mind: firstly, you want to maximize your return on the investment, and secondly, it is the room that many families spend the most time in, and its design needs to reflect this.

So how can your kitchen designer make the most of your space, but still create an aesthetically pleasing area? A good place to start is by reducing the amount of unnecessary bits and pieces that tend to accumulate over time. This can immediately create an apparent feeling pf space, and creates a more pleasant working environment.

The second area to consider is the type of features you would like to integrate onto your design. Contemporary kitchens often incorporate areas such as breakfast bars, wine coolers, etc while free standing tables would create a more traditional handmade kitchen style.

A bespoke kitchen can overcome many of the problems faced - for example, significant back problems can be avoided by designing worktops at exactly the correct height rather than working to standard height units.

In addition, you should consider your family circumstances - if you are elderly, then provision should be made for any heavy items to be stored low down to make them accessible, and there should be easy movement between drawers and cabinets.

The lighting and decor can have a huge impact on the style created in your kitchen, and how spacious it may feel. Even small kitchens may appear significantly larger with the correct lighting. Homeowners often choose to theme the colours in the kitchen, such as using terracotta etc to create a Mediterranean feel, or you may wish to have a neutral backdrop with particular areas highlighted in an accented colour. This can work particularly well in creating a contemporary kitchen style.

Whichever route is chosen, its important to consider how well the wall colour will blend across the whole kitchen, including the drawers, worktop, flooring and cabinets. When all things are considered, you should be able to create a kitchen that delivers practicality while still being a true reflection of your own unique personality and lifestyle.
